Best Retro Handheld Consoles UK 2026 — The Complete Guide

Introduction

Retro handheld gaming consoles have exploded in popularity over the last few years, and for good reason. Whether you're reliving childhood classics or discovering arcade gems for the first time, a dedicated retro handheld gives you the freedom to play anywhere — without subscriptions, without internet, and without compromise.

In this guide, we've rounded up the best retro handheld consoles available in the UK in 2026, covering everything from compact pocket devices to large-screen powerhouses. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned emulation enthusiast, there's something here for you.

What to Look for in a Retro Handheld Console

Before diving into our picks, here's what matters most when choosing a retro handheld:

• Operating system — Linux handhelds offer open-source flexibility and are often more stable for emulation. Android handhelds give you access to the Play Store and modern apps alongside retro gaming.
• Screen size and quality — from 3.5" pocket devices to 7" big-screen consoles, size affects portability and immersion. Look for HD or OLED/AMOLED displays for the best visuals.
• Performance — more powerful processors handle demanding systems like PS2, GameCube, and Nintendo DS with ease.
• Connectivity — WiFi, HDMI output, and Bluetooth expand what you can do with your device.
• Battery life — essential for gaming on the go.
